Sharon Hospital maintains a state-of-the-art, full service laboratory. The lab provides routine and emergency clinical services for hospital patients, area physician offices, nursing homes, schools and other institutions. The lab is staffed with board-certified pathologists and certified technicians and technologists. The lab is licensed in both Connecticut and N.Y. and accredited by CAP and CLIA.

The Laboratory at Sharon Hospital is committed to accuracy and efficiency in providing test results for its patients and physicians. Laboratory services are provided in the areas of hematology, coagulation, clinical chemistry, urinalysis, therapeutic drug monitoring, bacteriology, mycology, parasitology, transfusion medicine, blood bank, diagnostic serology, syphilis serology, surgical pathology, autopsy pathology and non-gynecologic cytology. The laboratory also collects specimens for DOT drug screen testing as well as Breath Alcohol Testing.

Rapid Access to All Patient Test Results

Through the Patient Care Inquiry (PCI) function of our hospital computer system your physician can access all test results performed by the Sharon Hospital Laboratory regardless of whether the patient was seen as an inpatient, in the emergency room or in the office. Same Day Reporting for Routine Test Orders

Results for chemistry profiles, blood counts and other routine testing will be reported on a same day basis. Physicians may access their reports through the hospital computer system at any time of the day. In addition, reports will be auto-faxed to the physician’s office for all coagulation testing and for any other procedures the physician requests the service. Hard copy reports are hand delivered to those physicians’ offices that our courier services on a daily basis and are mailed to those physicians outside our service area.

One-Hour Stat Test Results

Stat orders (for certain tests) will be given the highest priority with test results to you within one hour of receipt of the order and specimen in the laboratory-at no additional charge.

Sharon Hospital Laboratory Dedicated Specimen Transport

Sharon Hospital has a dedicated courier program to provide prompt courier services to meet your practice needs. Specimen pickup times have been arranged to provide the best service to your patients.

Surgical Pathology and Cytology Specimens

Sharon Hospital employs Consultants in Pathology to maintain our surgical pathology and non-gynecologic pathology needs. They are a group of highly trained pathologists whose expertise includes the full range of surgical pathology and cytology subspecialties including cervical-vaginal cytology, oral pathology and dermatologic pathology.

Patients With Special Needs

Patients who cannot afford laboratory procedures or tests will be referred to a Financial Advisor to determine their needs by calling (860 364-4275. A representative will be glad to help. Patients can call for an appointment with the Financial Advisor the day of their physician’s office visit or prior to the office visit.

Sharon Hospital Laboratory staff is available to provide rapid test results, answer questions about specimen requirements, test orders and status and report requests, and assist you with courier service requirements.

Cost Competitive Fees/Convenient Billing Options

Sharon Hospital Laboratory offers a cost-competitive fee schedule with convenient billing options. Medicare/Medicaid, HMO’s, third-party payors, and patients will be billed with your provision of appropriate billing information.

Certification/ Licensure

The laboratory is inspected and certified by the College of American Pathologists, Connecticut Department of Public Health, and New York State Department of Public Health. In addition the laboratory holds a CLIA license.

What does my lab test mean?

If your doctor has ordered a lab test and you’re not sure what the test means, please visit www.labtestsonline.org. Use this site to search for any lab test related questions you may have.

Your diagnosis must come from your physician. Any information you obtain through lab tests online should be discussed with your physician; not Sharon Hospital Laboratory.

Who do I speak with regarding results of my lab test performed by Sharon Hospital Laboratory?

All questions regarding your laboratory test results should be directed to your physician, who can interpret them in conjunction with your medical history and examination.

How long does it take to receive my test results?

Depending on the test ordered, results may be ready in as little as 24 hours or less. Certain tests may take several days or weeks. All results are sent to the ordering physician who may contact you when they are received.

Can I receive a copy of my test results?

Patients may receive a copy of their results only with a written authorization. If you would like a copy of your results, please fill out a patient authorization to release information form (available from your phlebotomist when your blood is being drawn or from the Medical Records department).

Can I request my own lab tests?

No, laboratory tests must be ordered by a physician. If you would like a certain test performed, please discuss with your physician who will decide if the test you want is appropriate.

My doctor ordered a lab test for me, but does not collect in the office, how do I get the test performed?

You may come to either the outpatient department at Sharon Hospital or to the Lakeville Collection Facility. The hours of operation are:

Do I need to make an appointment to have my blood drawn?

No. All Sharon Hospital drawing sites are walk-in centers. Appointments are appreciated for DOT drug screen collections as well as Breath Alcohol Testing. To make an appointment, please call 860.364.4267.

Do I need to fast before having my blood drawn?

Some blood tests require you to fast prior to being drawn, if you have a question about fasting prior to having blood work, please contact your physician.
